Buddha - Brief History In India around 500 B. C. Buddhism was founded by Buddha. It is the main religion practiced in most of Asia. The faith of its’ practitioners come from Dharma (Buddha’s teachings), and Sangha, (the place it was started). There are approximately 300 million people that follow his teachings. Today there are many Buddha statues,Bronze statues, and garden statues honoring the Buddhist culture and the man himself. Buddha was born in 563 B.C in Sakka, Southern Nepal. King Suddhodana was his father and Queen Maya was his mother. His real name was Siddartha Gautama. Siddartha means, "every wish fulfilled.” The basic beliefs include the "four noble truths" taught by the Buddha: existence is suffering; the cause of suffering is desire; there is a cessation of suffering, called Nirvana, or total transcendence. Great importance is placed on escaping from the material life and of ending desire. Buddhism is based upon the equality of all in the religious life. The goal of the Buddhist is to obtain Nirvana by riding ones self of all desires for material existence. This is attained by following the 'Eightfold Path': of right views, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. There appears to be two stories about the death of Buddha (when he attained Parinibbana). One is that his attendant, Ananda, failed to invite him to live on to the age of the world or even longer and the other is that he died by a sudden illness which began after he ate what is known as “Sukaramaddava.” Buddha died at the age of 80. His body was cremated and his ashes were divided into eight parts. The ashes were then deposited in several special mound-shaped monuments called “stupas.”

Many people wonder what the different postures of the Buddha statues mean. There are over 100 poses illustrating the life of the Buddha. The hand position; mudra, of each posture of Buddha is known as Bhumisparsha mudra. When Buddha attained Enlightenment there was no one to witness it. It is said that he touched the earth and called Mother Earth to bear witness. Buddha's image was not worshipped in the initial stages of Buddhism, but rather the Bodhi tree under which he achieved Enlightenment. Initially his disciples worshipped the Stupa, which contained Buddha's relics. Buddha’s statue is not an idol. He never claimed to be a prophet, messenger of God, nor did he claim himself any divinity. He was a teacher. He taught that eternal happiness was in oneself and to be found by oneself. Buddhism representation in today’s home decor consists of statues, figurines, and wall plaques from the Asian, Tibetan, Japanese, Indian, and other Oriental Art cultures. Stone, marble, jade, bronze, and brass are a few of the materials used to re-create the many poses of Buddha. Some examples of Buddha Poses: Buddha in Meditation, At age 29, Siddhartha left his home and his family and went to a hermitage where he became the monk Gautama, or as he is still called, Sakyamuni (The ascetic of the Sakyas). Naga Buddha on Snake, A meditation pose sheltered by a Naga, its body coiled up to serve as a cushion for the Buddha and it’s seven pronged head spreading over the Buddha's head as a cover. Seated Buddha in Meditation After seeing a decrepit old man, an invalid, and an ascetic beggar, he learned of suffering and decided to embrace asceticism. Standing Happy Buddha, Often called the Happy Buddha, he is really Hotei, a monk of the T’ang Dynasty. He was known for carrying a sack of candy which he handed out to children in the street. Buddha-Shakti on Lotus Base, vajradhara in his tantric aspect in embrace with his consort, Shakti, in a position of sexual union known as Yab-Yum (literally Father-Mother) in Tibetan and Maithuna in Sanscrit. Buddha Pose of Dispelling Fear and Protection, After seeing a decrepit old man, an invalid, and an ascetic beggar, he learned of suffering and decided to embrace asceticism. Sleeping Buddha, Buddha at the time of dying, at which point he gave his final instructions to 12 disciples gathered around him, and then he adopted this reclining pose and passed into Nirvana. Medicine Buddha, Buddha called himself the healer of the suffering world and explained that his Dharma (teaching) was his medicine. In Tibetan Buddhism, the image of Buddha with his bowl of herbal elixirs is used to invoke his healing presence. Buddha in Wish Giving Pose, Amitabha Buddha “The Buddha of Infinite Light” is a cosmic Buddha who resides in the Pure Land of the Western Heaven where all beings enjoy unbounded happiness. Amitabha Buddha is the most popular Buddha in Japan (known there as Amida) and China (known there as Amitofu).
